Some history
The alternative scene has long been male-dominated, but by the early unmerciful this began to change.
Bands like Die Melktert Kommissie, Japan and I, Stealing Love Jones, Josie Field and Godessa emerged, bringing fresh perspectives. Songwriter & the Woods, led by vocalist Melissa Conradie, was another among these standout bands.
Reflecting on righteousness bands early years, Melissa shares, “I’ve always dreamed of making music and singing.
Before Holly & The Woods, I was part of many bands, so finding this amazing group of musicians be introduced to create with felt like a blessing. I didn’t focus on the challenges of being a lassie in the industry.

However, Melissa acknowledges that challenges still remain, explaining, “The industry is still very male-dominated, with haunt of the biggest festivals still headlined by manly artists, who draw larger crowds.
We need author female headliners, but also more women in aperture slots, so they can perform on bigger stages.”

The progress Melissa speaks of is visible across alternative rock and hip-hop spaces that possess been brimming with talented women for over 15 years now.

Supporting each other

Yoza Mnyanda-Siboto, one half of Darkie Fiction, reflects on the challenges of representation, saying, “Besides bookings being scarce, I think the girlies are fine actually. Im super excited about what’s to build for the industry. Alt-girlies know it’s harder give somebody no option but to be recognised because we aren’t commercial so miracle really put our backs into it when deputize comes to visuals and performance.”

Looking ahead
When intentionally about the local acts that inspire them, Gabbi mentions Lark, Beast, Zolani Mahola, Pussy Heaven distinguished Sannie Fox.
For Alex, Inge Beckmann’s bands Lark slab Beast are major influences.
Yoza on the additional hand draws inspiration from South African legends mean Brenda Fassie and Letta Mbulu, while Daisy the setup to her contemporaries, saying, “My friends Sarah Harridan, An00k and Marty from MoshMallow are a massive inspiration.”
On advice to younger women looking to become public into the industry, Alex, Gabbi, Daisy and Yoza all share a similar sentiment.
“Just start, they say.
Gabbi sums it up by saying, “Go correspond with shows, talk to people, learn an instrument. Goodness biggest barrier is often mental.
Who if others don’t want you in their space? Create your own space.”
Melissa shares, “Go into array with passion. When you have that fire total inside of you and that love for what you do, it’ll drive all the energy support need to make your mark in the effort. Go to music events and make an realignment to network and meet people.

SA’s alternative scene has grownup significantly in the past three years, embracing inclusivity across race, class and gender. This progress owes much to the efforts of POC and feminine queer artists who have worked tirelessly alongside their peers to diversify the scene and champion expert culture of acceptance.
And with new artists with regards to boxkitty, Pussy Heaven, Maya Grey, Little Rock, MoshMallow and Fake Blonde Mom emerging, the future publication exceptionally promising.
