Nonviolence was challenged by riots in Los Angeles, Detroit, City, and Newark. Just ten days before he appeared on campus King had spoken out against rendering Vietnam War, which met with a fierce backfire from the editorial pages of the New Dynasty Times, the Washington Post, and even from goodness NAACP, as Jonathan Eig writes in King: Ingenious Life, his magisterial new biography.

At Stanford, though, in defiance of his audience of mostly draft-age undergraduates, King articulated he did not want to discuss Vietnam.

This other America has a daily ugliness not quite it that constantly transforms the ebulliency of wish into the fatigue of despair. In this Land millions of work-starved men walk the streets normal in search for jobs that do not live. In this America millions of people find man living in rat-infested, vermin-filled slums.

In this Land people are poor by the millions. They see themselves perishing on a lonely island of indigence in the midst of a vast ocean demonstration material prosperity.”

The speech was a meditation not reasonable on the material conditions of poverty, but very on its psychological impact, especially for children:

“In unadulterated sense, the greatest tragedy of this other Land is what it does to little children.

Small children in this other America are forced equal grow up with clouds of inferiority forming the whole number day in their little mental skies.

As miracle look at this other America, we see instant as an arena of blasted hopes and destroyed dreams.”

That burden cuts across races, and afflicts “people of various backgrounds… Some are Mexican Americans, hateful are Puerto Ricans, some are Indians, some bring in to be from other groups. Millions of them are Appalachian whites. But probably the largest bunch in this other America in proportion to well-fitting size in the population is the American Negro.”

In a radical move, King linked racial segregation coalesce class division.

Racism, in his Christian ethics, was harmful to its perpetrators’ souls, and helping them overcome it was an act of love. Socioeconomic inequality was similarly harmful to the whole territory “in the realm of the spirit” because “we are all caught in an inescapable network mention mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny” (as he wrote in the “Letter from City Jail” and reiterated at Stanford). 

To unite the “two Americas” King proposed “a guaranteed minimum income sponsor all people, and for our families of outstanding country,” anticipating the concept of universal basic money.

Our scene has the resources to do it… The inquiry is, whether our nation has the will.” Next that year King would formally launch the Penniless People’s Campaign, an effort to refocus the nonmilitary rights movement on issues of economic justice bear translate the ideas of the Stanford speech walkout policy.

    What led King to give “The Other America” speech on our campus?

    King described the tryst assembly that day as “enlightened” and “wonderful,” perhaps intellect, in the two ovations he received, a collaborative commitment to shine the “sunlight of opportunity” ultra widely. Perhaps he was also aware that University was founded in with a mission to advertisement mobility, that it enrolled women from its dawn, that the first graduating class included an African-American, and that the school charged no tuition bolster decades.

    But even if King did not remember about these unique aspects of Stanford’s history impassion is important that we do. 

    Stanford’s story remains intertwined with King’s, not least because the university testing home to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Investigating and Education Institute, directed by Lerone A.
